Your exhibition stand may have the best design, the latest gadgets and the best giveaways in the room but if you make poor choices in terms of staff members this will let your stand down. An exhibition stand is only as good as the people you have staffing it so it is crucial to your exhibition success that you choose the right team of people.
Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and knowing what your employees’ are is key to deciding who is best to man your stand.
Here are a few things to consider when choosing a winning exhibition stand team:
Attitude
The right attitude is a huge part of what makes an exhibition team a winning team. You need people who are enthusiastic about your products/services but also who understand the advantages of attending exhibitions and are happy to represent your company.
Personality
Each employee has a unique personality and you know best to decide who will be a good fit for the exhibition. Pick a team for the event and audience – someone who worked well for one event might not suit a different event with different audience. People who are naturally more outgoing are likely to be the best people as they will be happy to approach people and bring them onto your stand.
Experience
It makes sense to have the best and most experienced members of staff on your team. However, make sure they are not jaded by attending many past exhibitions. They may have the experience but also need the right attitude to each exhibition.
Don’t be afraid to use an inexperienced employee. Just make sure they are well trained and understand what is expected of them. Shadowing a more experienced employee on the stand is a great way for them to learn and become one of your top picks for the next show.
Mix it Up
You might think that you just need sales people on your stand but not necessarily. You do need strong sales people but try having a mix of people from other departments. Potential leads often have lots of questions so having a mix of people will ensure you have someone who can answer any question that arises. For example, if you are launching a new product, include someone from product development who has in-depth knowledge about the product.
Teamwork
Choose team members who you know will work well together on the stand. Manning an exhibition stand is tiring and can be a long day so it helps if people get on. Animosity between team members will not encourage visitors to your stand.
Numbers
Make sure you have enough people to man your stand all day – an unattended stand will not result in any new customers or leads. You need a large enough team to cover breaks plus any workshops or meetings.
Training
Once you have decided on your winning team, make sure you carry out some pre-event training. Ensure all your team members know why they are attending the show, your main objectives and what you expect from them. Make sure they have the relevant product/service knowledge. They also need to understand how you expect them to behave, what to wear, where they need to be and when.
Evaluate
After the exhibition take time to have an honest review of how your team performed, which team members shone and which hid themselves away. You can then use this to inform your team choice for your next exhibition.
