As with indoor exhibiting, if you’re not actively trying to improve your exhibition presence then your return on investment may suffer. Thankfully it doesn’t have to cost a lot to get visitors talking about your brand – here are some of our top ways to improve your presence at your next outdoor exhibition:
Six Second Rule
Research into trade shows suggests that the average exhibitor has around six seconds to attention of a passing visitor, ask yourself these questions to find out if your stand is going to grab people’s attention.
- Can who you are and what you do be easily identified at a glance?
- Is your stand inviting?
- Are your exhibition graphics eye-catching, bold and simple?
- Does your stand have a clear message?
Additionally keeping your exhibition stand tidy, free of clutter and as open as possible will grab the attention of more visitors.
A social media campaign for the exhibition should ideally be running before, during and after your exhibition in order to get the most out of it. First and foremost you can create a hashtag for both Twitter and Facebook that is unique and relevant to your business, keep it short and sweet as Twitter has a 140 character limit so the longer the hashtag the less room you will have for your post.
Let people know you are attending the upcoming exhibition and invite others to join you. You can also run competitions either before or during the show to create a buzz around your brand, announcing the winners in person at your stand is a great way to bring visitors to your stand.
If you’re in the B2B sector using the LinkedIn group features allows you to create a place for exhibitors, suppliers and attendees to join and actively converse with one and other. Getting to know who’ll be attending the show allows you to discover potential leads before it has even started.

Exhibiting outdoors means you aren’t necessarily confined to the same restrictions as indoor areas. For example large outdoor flags are available to use outdoors that are perfect for grabbing visitors attention even at long distances. These can also be custom printed so people can see at a distance who you are and what you offer.
With a printed gazebo your entire stand can also be representative of your brand while providing much needed cover for all weather conditions. Simple, brightly coloured stands are the best way to draw the attention of passing visitors.
Train Your Staff
While manning an exhibition stand may seem simple, staff that haven’t been formally trained may struggle, particularly if it’s their first time. All staff members should understand what your objective is and why you are exhibiting.
A staff meeting before the exhibition is vital, you should explain what questions are most likely to be asked and the best replies to them, this means that the staff should be knowledgeable about the product or service you are providing. If they don’t know the answer to a visitors question then it’s perfectly acceptable for them to pass the visitor on to a member of staff who can help them.
You should also hold a post exhibition meeting with everyone who manned the stand to explain how it went and how they can improve for next time.
